The maths does not take into account, for example, impacts of major significance to local people which take a long time to verify, and even longer to act on. Local evidence of people made sick by eating deformed fish in the polluted Athabasca River, which receives waste from tar sands mining, sits more comfortably in the space of encounter and lived experience than of discount rates.
